Hello everyone. My heart goes out to those individuals who have experienced kundalini awakenings but are unaware of the term or concept of "kundalini." I suspect there are many such individuals out there seeking treatment from psychiatrists/neurologists/ etc who are also unware of kundalini. This can lead to disastrous results. I was once in that same boat myself.
I was wondering how we can convince the general medical community that kundalini is a "real thing." I don't want anyone out there to go through what I experienced before I was informed that I had had a kundalini awakening. Should Kundalini "Syndrome" be added to the DSM 5 (even though I certainly do not believe that kundalini is mental disorder)? Maybe some advocacy is in order.
Stephen - I thought my advocacy days were behind me but your idea made my heart feel happy! How wonderful will be the time when doctors acknowledge and can support the KA process!
not sure we'll see that anytime soon, since the western medical model isn't going to recognize that there is a spiritual aspect to humanity that transcends or is more important than the physical aspect, which they center their treatment around. so then, what do we do?
Hi Stephen,
Thank you for your post. I very much share your concerns. When I had my kundalini awakening 7 years ago I fell into the clutches of the mental health system which was a trauma of its own. Fortunately, I had an alternative framework to the negative pathologised one they gave me. Otherwise who knows what might have happened if had internalised their diagnosis.
It is going to be a long journey I think to open up medical minds. I think the medical model, which as Jo says is totally inappropriate for psychological/spiritual issues, reflects the materialist ideology that underpins the economic system that we are living under. There are a number of people and organisations ( see https://emergingproud.com/ for example) that are trying to address this, and some of us at the Kundalini Collective are also exploring ideas on how increase awareness and knowledge of spiritual awakenings and how to support people through them. Also the Spiritual Crisis Network ( see https://spiritualcrisisnetwork.uk/ ) are doing some work on this and I am sure that they would welcome input from other interested people who have experienced kundalini awakening such as yourself if you wanted to get involved.
Hi Stephen, interesting question about the DSM 5. I think the medical model works very well for physical illness but is much less understanding and supportive of mental, emotional and spiritual issues. It's generally accepted that medication is the best (cheapest?) option to get a patient "back to normal" and there is a lot of fear around people who appear to have lost touch with (concensus) reality.
Not sure how we can change this but talking about it is a good start!
