I think balance is a very important concept and a good subject to raise.
I feel we need to allow different parts of ourselves to express themselves (rather than suppress them) as long as we are not doing active damage to ourselves or others.
An example for me is alcohol. I was brought up in an English Pub culture, and happen to like beer!
I continue to have an internal discussion on "should" I give up alcohol to help my spiritual progress.......then think that "shoulds" are not helpful as they suggest both social conditioning and the suppression of a part of ourselves.
So for the moment "balance" seems appropriate. That is drinking on occasion...especially in a positive social context, and also not drinking for a number of days each week.

The last years i observe the whole thing with balance and seems like an intelligent active force.
