Speaker: Jack Saxelby-Smith
Topic: Jack will talk about his PHD project, which involves gathering first-hand accounts from people in the UK, US, and Japan who describe challenging experiences often referred to as “Kundalini syndrome”. By exploring these personal accounts, Jack’s research aims to contribute to growing discussions around spiritual practice, spiritual crisis, and the ways Kundalini is understood and experienced in contemporary contexts. In this presentation, Jack will discuss how he came to this research topic, outline the methodology, how the research has been developing and share some preliminary reflections and themes emerging so far.
About Jack
Jack is a second-year PhD researcher in Religious Studies at The Open University in the UK. His research focuses on challenging experiences associated with practices such as meditation and yoga, with a focus on those described as ‘kundalini syndrome’. He is currently conducting interviews with people who describe having had this experience to better understand its impact, how it is interpreted, and how support is accessed.
